Why do cuts from self mutilation scar but cuts from regular accidents not scar?

I used to cut a lot and I have a bunch of scars on my wrist and hips. But why do those cuts stay there in the form of scars while cuts that you get when you get a catscratch or bump your arm off a countertop, etc fade into nothing?
