Why do you think people cut?

When you hear of self-mutilation what's your first thought? Why do you think they do it? You think they do it for attention? Do you think they want to die? Do you think they "Emo"? Do you think only "Emo's" cut? What would you do if your child, sister, or friend cut? Just wondering.
